I completely understand how you feel about losing the tree. I think it is wonderful that you plan to keep a memento of it--and such an interesting one. I'm looking forward to knowing the tree's real age. I hope they can keep you a viable piece.

Oh, no. :-( I am so very sorry. These trees are our friends, as Treebeard (I think) said. We might have a problem with one of our oaks in the front yard but haven't got the expert advice yet. A sugar maple? Wow. Those are relatively rare in the NYC area, or so I've been told. I hope you have many pictures of it to join your new table.

I'm sorry. You may remember the battles we had with our previous neighbours about our gum tree, so you know I sympathise. I dread the time we will have to make the same decision.

I think making a table out of a slice to remember it is a lovely idea.
