I am a geek.

Well, not your usual geek. I have an addiction to the not obvious ( Read more... )

sexism, sports, actors, football

It's incredibly annoying the way some men see women as just doing something because their boyfriend/husband does it. It's the same with gaming - people assume that I'm just a hanger-on, rather than a gamer in my own right. Bah.

And I used to have a serious crush on Armand Assante. :)

I loved him in the miniseries of 'The Odessey'. Mmmm....in tunics and stuff? Yes please! :D

Exactly! Thank you! I am so vindicated now. I actually enjoy football (both types), and one year when I was a teen, I followed every single college bowl game (there were 26 that year) that season and kept stats! Not even my brothers were THAT into it. I have always been into sports (even though I don't play them well).

I sometimes wonder about men. They just don't think a woman can think beyond clothes and makeup. It's bad here sometimes. The times I have had to tell men off when they thought they were schooling me on a subject.....I could pay for graduate school.

Yes! Don't even get me started on the number of times I've had guys start to explain things to me because they think I won't have a clue about it. In the meantime, I'm probably more knowledgeable about it than them, haha. I love clothing and makeup too, which probably confuses them terribly - it's easier to accept someone as a fellow geek if they're not wearing lipgloss and eyeliner. :)

I guess if we looked like a 'typical' geek was supposed to, they'd believe us. :)

I've always heard about Fantasy Football, but don't know exactly what it is.

It's just people who draft 'teams' and you go head to head aginst people in your league every week. It's so macho, I relish being the sole woman sometimes that beats them. :)

It's fun. Plus my Dad supports me with it. He's the biggest feminist I know that has male parts.

I think I can say that I feel your pain! I'm not a follower of football, but I'm a baseball fan. I used to be so fanatical about it that I could quote the standings of each team in the majors, tell you about any player on any team ... I could even tell you the name of every baseball commissioner going back to the very first one. I was married at that time, and I thought my husband would be proud to have a wife who knew so much about sports. NOPE. One day he asked me to quit talking about baseball to his friends. Apparently, they were intimidated and turned off because I knew more about baseball than they did.

Truly a WTF moment.

Wow....they didn't have issues, did they? *sarcasm

I have a girlfriend who follows the Mets like that. I mean she can tell you way back stuff. She gets the same looks and reactions too. Like a cute girl can't know about sports. I mean...come ON already.

And I have a female cousin that love boxing. Diva to the max, and loves boxing.

I don't see what's so strange. Some women like sports, some like shopping, some like shoes. They need to get over it.

Men are sooo stupid like that.

Here's a new twist for you: I'm not an expert on any sport, but even with my limited knowledge, I know more than my guy does. He feels nothing toward any sport whatsoever, with the small exception of hockey.

(on the other hand...bring up Alex Van Halen vs. Neal Peart and watch him go into geek mode...)

P.S. I need to meet your girlfriend, LOL. I know lots of things about the Mets way back when. :P

Your boyfriend is a rare one. Well maybe he isn't, but he's not 'macho' in the stereotypical sense. :)

Next time you walk past a mirror, you can say hello to her. :)

My mother is a football fan (I could say fanatic but I'm feeling generous this a.m.) She's followed all sports since I was very young, but football is her favorite. She will quote stats and discuss strategy with you all day long and amazed many a chauvinist :)

I like football, the World kind. I don't follow it but I do like it.

p.s. Is that Robert Downey Jr.? *faints*

Yay for your Mom showing those those guys what's what. :)

And it's not Robert Downey, Jr., but it's not like I don't like him too. :)
