That's the only thing that could possibly describe the hallways at this time. School ended an hour ago and there was probably no one left in the high school. Well, maybe there was still one person.
He was the exchange student from America. The new kid everyone was curious about. The violin prodigy that kept to himself. He was Lee Byunghun.
Byunghun or L.joe, as he liked to be called, never liked the attention he got from other people. He preferred keeping a low profile. He wanted to be the regular kid that you see everyday in class. He didn't want the special attention he received just because he came abroad. He definitely didn't crazy girls (or boys) to follow him around. He didn't want people gushing on and on about his non-existent looks or his supposedly legendary talent. Ironically, it was a certain girl's fault why he was still in school so late.
Park Eunbi. A word to describe her was obsessive. Another would be ridiculous. She was a little- no too enthusiastic about the male students in her school; from the most popular boy in school to the pretty boy in the student council, or probably the metrosexual heartthrob to the adorable class clown. She just loved following them around. Unfortunately for L.joe, he just happened to be her latest object of obsession.
L.joe walked around the school, distracting himself, familiarizing himself with the area so that he wouldn't get lost again. He clutched onto his bag as he explored the music department of the school. Strangely, L.joe suddenly wanted to practice playing the violin so he tried opening several doors for the different practice rooms. All of them were locked except for that one room at the end of the hallway.
The door's hinges creaked when L.joe opened the door slowly. It didn't feel right. It felt like there was something in there but L.joe just couldn't put his finger on it. He felt around the wall, trying to find the light switch. Once he had found it & switched it on, he stepped inside and took a good look around the room. It was dusty, as if nobody went in there for decades. There was a white cloth covering what he presumed to be a grand piano, two bookshelves filled with different music books for various instruments, and an old blackboard with the staff bar with faded notes etched on it.
L.joe hesitantly closed the door and walked over to a cabinet before looking for a violin that he could use. He regretted not bringing his own violin case with him but with the unexpected event of Eunbi chasing him around until her chauffeur arrived, made him forget all about his poor musical instrument.
Minutes passed and L.joe had checked almost all the cabinets there, not finding a single violin case. He had already found several guitars, a handful of snare drums, some triangles and an old keyboard, but not the particular four-stringged instrument he loved playing.
"Dammit. To think that this is a music room..." He muttered incoherently and continued his search in the closet next to the piano. His eyes widened in awe when he saw a sleek, black violin perched on one of the shelves. It had to be one of the most beautiful instruments he'd ever seen. Yet, he found it weird that it wasn't collecting dust like everything else. Nonetheless, he reached up to hold it gently before he got the ebony bow laying on the floor. L.joe looked around for rosin and rubbed it against the hair of the bow. He closed the cabinet door and placed the violin on the grand piano softly and got a stack of sheet music from his bag on the floor.
'The Devil's Trill Sonata' it read. It was L.joe next recital piece. A piece he would have to play in front of a new audience.
In all honesty, it was all the same to him. Sure they're new faces & names but deep down they were just the same as the last.crowd. They were people who would judge his skills amongst themselves and pretend that they don't. As if he didn't know. They were the people who would've said that "He could've done better." or "That's nothing compared to what my child can do." They were the people that congratulated him with fake smiles as if they were made out of plastic.
He sighed deeply, unclenched his fist, that probably balled up when he was thinking of those people and placed the papers on a stand before he walked back to the piano to get the violin and walk back.
He took a deep breath before he let the violin rest on his collarbone and held the violin's neck gently, pressing his fingers on the right strings before he pressed his jaw gently against the chin rest.
L.joe brought the bow up and drew it against the strings. A smooth sound flowed right out of the violin as L.joe changed the notes, progressing through the piece, creating a haunting yet inciting melody. He knew this piece was technically demanding but he'd rather play it leisurely instead of being pressured to be a perfectionist like he usually is. L.joe just enjoyed the freedom he had right now. He had already forgotten about the world outside these four walls, when he shut his eyes and let the music surround him. He wanted to thank the delusional girl for chasing him around, unintentionally leading him to this music room but he didn't want to sprint around the whole school again.
Yet this feeling of nostalgia felt different to him. It wasn't the usual tranquil feeling he had. His eyes shot open when he felt like he wasn't alone. It was like there was something or someone watching him from the corner of the room but he was sure that there was no one with him there. So he decided to shrug it off and continue playing the song. Suddenly he felt faint for some odd reason. It was very peculiar. L.joe rarely got dizzy and if he did it was because of gym class, his weakest subject besides math.
There was definitely something in this music room. Something ominous. Something menacing. Not wanting to think about it any longer, L.joe kept on brushing the feeling off that is until he felt his knees wobble and give out, making him stop playing abruptly. He looked all around him and found no one there. L.joe took deep breaths before he laid down, trying to get the lightheaded feeling away.
"Who are you?" he muttered softly and shut his eyes, getting a soft giggle in reply before everything turned black.
