3DO!!

Biggest highlight of today: purchased a 3D0 game console at Goodwill for only $10. Never really heard much about these things (for good reason, they didn't last too long). Came with everything needed to run: power, video cable, 1 controller, and 3 games (Gex, Advanced Dungeons and Dragons: Slayer, and Shockwave. Pretty damn awesome! Best part? The ( Read more... )

I think the main reason 3D0 didn't survive long back in its day was the steep price point. Sure, it could run rings around the popular game systems of the time, but it cost about as much as all of them combined. It never got a foothold in the market, and thus available games were limited too. I remember seeing these in stores, and if I'm not mistaken, some of the premium editions retailed for closer to $600.

No, you're pretty accurate. According to the wikipedia entry, it started out at $700, but couldn't get enough early adopters at that price so they lowered it.

All of this probably explains why I never really heard of it. I had a SNES for the longest time, then an N64. I was a Nintendo fanboy back then (young and naive) so I probably ignored the 3D0 even when it was in stores. Eventually I gave in to a PS1 when FFVII came out and my friends talked it up to me. 3D0 didn't stand a chance of entering my household.

Was good playing with you and the IC crew! I was the nipple guy.

Friend of mine in first college had a 3do and it was impressive at the time but didn't really seem to have the simple fun factor of even an NES.

One of my absolute favorite systems was the Turbogfx 16. Very innovative, the handheld was (a little too) revolutionary, and the games were on something the size of a credit card.

Holy crap, that was you?! I'm surprised you found the server! What did you do, find my name and join it? Or did you check out the IC forum and get the server number from there? Either way thanks for dropping in. We do this every Wednesday, and some play on Fridays too (but Wednesday is the official day).

As for the 3D0, it seems alright. The most entertaining game by far was Gex, but that could also be played on the more reasonable PlayStation. If the system had taken off I'm sure the game support would be better, but as it stands.... it didn't.

Yea, it took a bit of searching for the server, and I was foiled for awhile because they only brought the server up right at 10pm. Found the info easily enough though just poking around the site. Actually the icrontic site is nice, and easily navigable as well - I will have to look at it more often.

But yes, got in and had a hoot, though I think you missed me in batman mode (scout using bat only) which worked for a bit despite me having not played in what feels like quite a while.

I never wore it, and only washed it recently so it doesn't smell like a thrift store shirt. =)
