Hmmm... I can't help but think that as good an actor as Tony is, that Gibbs would be able to find out about his military background. But I am willing to suspend disbelief and keep reading! :) Especially for a Tibbs first-time. LOL!
I thought of it that way - you can find anything if you have an idea that you need to find it, if you ask right questions, but you need to know there are questions you need to ask. Tony had on his side high profile information, good cause (at least in his eyes) to pretend to be somewhat another and best helpers to hide anything that didn't need to be known. Gibbs just didn't know he has to ask different questions, it all seemed to be pretty straightforward. Okay, I can admit the base of the case may seem to be a bit shaky - I'm not sure that your CO in the army can help you to pretend to be a police officer to resolve your own problems, but it's a fiction, after all :-)
