The Best New Show on TV

Sep 19, 2005 11:05

Straw poll: what, in your opinion, is the best new show to hit the air in the last 18 months, and why? If you could watch just three, what would they be?

My own answers - reasons to appear here later:
Battlestar Galactica
Lost
Stargate: Atlantis (given the opportunity to cheat, I'd alternate with Stargate: SG-1, which is kindasorta new on account ( Read more... )

television, sci-fi, sg-1, stargate, battlestar galactica, lost, atlantis

I had a look and it seemed a little silly (not that there's anything wrong with silly TV, but I'm short on TV-watching time). I'll have a look some time to see if it's worthwhile. Thanks.

I'd be more inclined to watch battlestar if it wasnt called battlestar (die-hard-old-school fan). I guess it is less than 2 years old although i feel like ive been at odds with its creation for much longer than that ( ... )

I agree with you on Battlestar. They need to change every proper noun in every script. That girl may be Starbuck's daughter, but she's not Starbuck.

And Gaius is a spaced out weakling, one the real Baltar wouldn't bother squashing.

When you create a completely new show, give it its own name.

Beyond that I'd have to say Lost is the best, though I have not been watching it due to a schedule conflict. I have hopes for Threshold, but to soon to tell.

Battlestar Nostalgia banazir September 22 2005, 01:15:37 UTC
Nostalgia makes chauvinists of everyone. I'm sure I'd feel similarly about a reimagining of Firefly or even the 1980s Buck Rogers.

But if the original creators want to reimagine, well... I'm perhaps not the right person to talk to. I'm one of the least doctrinaire people about franchises, trademarks, and the exclusivity of a name. If they want to call it Galactica, fine by me; if they want to keep all the trappings of the 12 Colonies and change all the names, that's fine too. And if they want to take a middle road with lots of allusions to the original series, grat. After all, is "Apollo" a proper name? Are the cryptic allusions to the Olympian Gods? Are the zodiac signs?

The thing is, it is a new series. In some ways it's weirder, in some ways it's more serious; in nearly every way it's darker and grittier, in nearly every way it's more transcendent and mysterious.

I remember only a smattering of original episodes, and they had their charm, but it was Buck Rogers meets Bonanza. BSG v2 has legs, and it is an ambitious ( ... )

I've watched most of the new BSG, and my opinions are mostly the same as yours. I can do without Gaius Baltar for the most part. Also, I'm not sure how much I would call this "science" fiction. I've enjoyed the episodes featuring Richard Hatch and would like to see him play a more important role; perhaps elected to the Council or made VP.

My favourite new tv shows:
House
Hugh Laurie. Duh. And even though it is a formula show, it's a really well done formula show. Again, Hugh Laurie is fantastic.

Battlestar Galactica
Realistic political SF. What's there not to love?

Lost
I haven't seen very much of this (hoping to get the DVD for my birthday), but the few episodes I've seen just sucked me right in.
