As a way to thank her I asked who her favorite characters were, and she -- obviously a woman of excellent taste -- told me she thought the Malfoy men intriguing.
snarkywench_64 told me hinted strongly what prop I should use, and like Pavlov's dog, I immediately had an idea for that very prop! It's probably not quite what either meant... and I'll work on something a bit more cheerful in the morning... but for now...

Particles of dust gusted into his face as the Bateleur owl back-stroked, an ungainly parcel clutched in its claws answer for its graceless flight.
Draco’s stomach knotted in icy dread, and he knew what he’d find in the package.
He’d seen it a hundred… a thousand times. Admired its gleaming surface, the polished, smooth wood, the imperial air of command granted its wielder.
Tears welled, unbidden. Grey eyes suddenly watery blue.
Bateleur owls delivered legacies.
Draco refused to cry.
With shaking hand he picked up the paper-wrapped parcel, wrenched the paper from its distinctive shape.
It was his father’s cane.
