From Who to Hugos to sci-fi in Asia

I'm pleased as punch that Doctor Who (and Steven Moffatt) won a Hugo Award (the sci-fi equivalent of the Oscars according to this) for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form - for the second time around! Take that, Starlog. Many fans would easily agree that Girl in the Fireplace was one of the best written, and acted, episodes in S2. For S3, my bet ( Read more... )

Hee! Please find a way to get Comic-Con to Singapore =D With a better organiser -shudder-

Luring of the big draws... perhaps it's possible to draw upon the attendance of the recent Heroes World Tour? I highly doubt anyone thought there'll be such a ginormous turnout [I know I didn't]. If the turnout at Vivo's anything to base on for just one fandom (and Heroes is only on cable here!), there's quite an available fanbase out there.

(and oooh Gaiman!)

Seriously! I am kicking myself for not making it to San Diego in all those years in the US. As for Gaiman, he's signed up for the 2009 WorldCon in Vancouver, according to this list.

The only official fan group with any events here thus far seems to be the Star Trek Club of Singapore. To be honest, I love chatting with fellow "geeks" online but meeting others in person is quite another thing! Hmmm.... Maybe there's an online community (on LJ) where we can scope out possible ideas and interest to get this going?

Worldcon in Singapore is a fascinating idea. There would certainly be people up for it. But you do need some experience on the ground. It takes 200+ fans to put on a Worldcon, and while people from around the world would be keen to help, you do need locals. And I'm afraid a full-time event organizer for Worldcon is probably not on. It is an entirely volunteer-run event. No one gets paid.

Thanks for that. Yes, I figure we need to get the grassroots going on this. That's why we started by checking out existing "organised" fan groups. If you've been part of any of these events, any suggestions on how to get started?
