From Who to Hugos to sci-fi in Asia

I'm pleased as punch that Doctor Who (and Steven Moffatt) won a Hugo Award (the sci-fi equivalent of the Oscars according to this) for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form - for the second time around! Take that, Starlog. Many fans would easily agree that Girl in the Fireplace was one of the best written, and acted, episodes in S2. For S3, my bet's on Paul Cornell's Human Nature/Family of Blood, though Moffatt's Blink did scare the living daylights out of me! It'll be a tough call.

Apart from this new post-Hugo sci-fi list to catch up on, the awards were presented at Nippon 2007, the 65th World Science Fiction Convention (and first WorldCon in Asia, after 3 times in Australia), which got me thinking: Why can't we host something like this, or even the third International Comic Con (after San Diego and London) in Singapore?!

We have the facilities and definitely the fanbase, even if certain organisers lack experience in throwing a *real* fan event (e.g. the assembly line approach with the Heroes World Tour). I know of a few others who'd gladly help out but we'd need an event manager with the experience and interest to take this on full time. Lastly, we'd have to find a way to lure some BIG draws. Say, Neil Gaiman, Frank Miller, Jeph Loeb, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and some of our faves from Farscape, Heroes, BSG, Stargate, Star Trek, Star Wars ... ?
