Oh, how interesting! I was just feeling very dry in this hiatus time and you are coming up with something I haven't heard much about before. "Band of Brothers"! HBO! English actors! (yes I am a patriot ;D)
hee! Just be aware that the English actors are playing Americans. It tells the story of a company in a Paratrooper regiment during World war II. I love it to bits - but I must warn you; there is no romance in this series. On the other hand there is quite a lot of good friendships! (and lots of pretty men. *g*)
;D I just remembered that there is a little glimpse of romance in the episode Bastogne, but only a glimpse.
As for "Band" - there are many great friendships. None as turbulent as Pullo and Vorenus though. But what I really like about this series 8apart form the reasons listed above) is the friendship between the soldiers - and how it's their friendship that gets them through the war. That said it is an American retelling of certain WWII events - so its focus is solely on the conflict in North-West Europe.
All I have to do is read someone's post talking about Martin and I'm back in that world, longing to reread everything and wishing he'd hurry up and write Book 5. He's truly one of the most remarkable writers I've ever read.
And working on some Wild Cards project, and getting a tad cranky about fans complaining that he should be working on ASoIaF instead. Not a good sign. :-(
No it's not. And as much as I feel its his right to take the time he needs, part of me is becoming very impatient.
Btw - I found the Durrell book you mentioned (" My family and other animals")! Oddly enough my local bookstore had decided to stack up on that one. I say oddly because I suspect Norwegian bookstores are the shabbiest in Scandinavia. There is one good bookstore in this country, and it is not in the city I live. Thankfully there is Amazon. ;D
Pinstripe lawyerly affectations and tweedy impertinence, YES! That's also one of my favourite lines, and it made me really love Landsman, for delivering such an insightful comment.
The Wire reigns supreme when it comes to quotes like that! Like I said I love the dialogue on Deadwood, but The Wire just feels more real. Less literary allusions perhaps? ;)
I also love this one by Freamon:
Freamon: Ain't none of you ever been in the military? Don't you know how to make a 30-inch quick tie? (Nobody speaks) Freamon: Draft dodging peace freaks, huh?
That's hilarious! Much as I love Tolkien I can understand the poor Inklings (and btw - would the singular of Inklings be Inkling? Because saying "I'm an Inkling" sounds rather sad? Possibly because, to me, it sounds so much like the Norwegian word ynkling with means a pathetic person. But I majorly digress here, and I'm moving on)
"The king stay the king."
So true! The complexity of the show always hits me when I try to write about it. It's like running into a wall because there is just so much! I have great plans for a marathon rewatch soon. I'm just curious to see s1 in light of s3.
*g* And I you wish you can follow it up with tosk, which means a really stupid person, and is derived from the Norwegian word torsk which is our name for the fish cod. So basically tosk is saying someone is stupid like a cod. Sometimes I love my language. ;)
And yes - I will properly herald the start of my rewatch. hee.
I absolutely adore what you said about Deadwood and Rome. Both of those shows will always mean so much to me.
I need to read more ASOIAF! I've read the first two books, but haven't yet managed to get around to A Storm of Swords. I love the individual characters' stories and the world Martin's created, but I'm a bit apprehensive when I read them. I'm always afraid one of my favorite characters is going to die a horrible death.
I've yet to watch Band of Brothers or The Wire, but I'm looking forward to seeing them quite a lot!
Ah Deadwood and Rome - they are right up there among my favourite shows of all time. The two others would be "The Wire" and "Band of Brothers". Hee. Of the latter I must say that "The Wire" is possibly the best show I have ever seen. A very clever person on my f-list said the series is more akin to a long novel than a tv-series. It's very, very true.
but I'm a bit apprehensive when I read them. I'm always afraid one of my favorite characters is going to die a horrible death.
There is that yes. Martin is pretty merciless when it come to killing characters, but the way I see it is that the characters will die whether I read about them or not, so I might as well read. it's a small consolation to the sure - but it keeps me going! ;)

You know me far too well already. :D I guess a good friendship like "Pullo 'n Vorenus" will do.

As for book 5 we may have to wait a bit longer. Apparently he is stuck again. *sob*
