Dump Cake

My grandma always made a delicious "dump cake". I have her recipe, but I'd like to make a couple of changes, and I'm needing some advice for that. Normally, I steer clear of cake mixes, but this is tried and true for my grandma, so I'd like to keep using the mix if possible ( Read more... )

Dump cakes are very forgiving. Keep the volume of wet and dry ingredients more or less the same and substitute away.

Word of truth. You can never have too much chocolate. I'd use cardamom rather than cinnamon if you're going with cherries, but that's a personal preference.

Yep, exactly: you can never, ever have too much chocolate! Also, cake mix flavors can be easily substituted. Fresh cherries would probably be very nice, as they'd mellow out the super-sweet pie filling. Keep the volume about the same as the pineapple would be, and you'll be fine. Spices are a personal choice, but you could always try cinnamon once and see, right?

I will third that "you can never have too much chocolate" sentiment. Personally though, I feel that cinnamon and chocolate clash too much. Cinnamon seems to be better paired with other more "spicy" flavors, like nutmeg.

I'm in this camp -- I like all your proposed substitutions except I'd ditch the nutmeg/cinnamon/etc. step altogether :) I do think (even though cinn + choc can work) it clashes with the choc covered cherry flavor profile.

Personally I would try substituting applesauce for the pineapple :) or even avacado (it would keep the wet ratio without any major taste difference if you're going for the chocolate/cherry taste)

I absolutely love cinnamon and chocolate together, I always add cinnamon to my chocolate desserts.

I do too. Also, pumpkin pie spice to hot chocolate. Chocolate is good when it's spicy.
