You should absolutly call the ombudsman person for lettings - they can't enter the property without notice to all the tenants regardless of the situation as it's part of the 'quiet enjoyment' part of your contract - sue his ass.

Heh, he's a barrister..

There's no reason for us to sue him, he's normally fine and we're on a shaky situation as it is...

Just disliking the current state of affairs. :/

Seriously, he should have given you written warning of at least 24 hours to enter shared areas, which I believe he would have done by walking in through the hall way! So although you don't want to push your luck, you can keep a note for future reference.

Oh and depending on how you let the house, depends on rent. If it was let as a house with a total amount for the house, damn! You're lucky. If you all pay for a room each, then he can't charge you for a room. (Well I'm pretty sure he can't, as long as you don't use it.)

1) Do you mind a part time baby?
2) Does your landlord mind DSS?
3) WTH with the paint, how much effort does it take to move something or throw a sheet over it? Is there paint on the flooring then as well?!
