I've been corrected on that point, though it's what Whoever at one of the wank communities was saying. However this seems more likely:
"The LJ Talk address is the same as the LJ email address, and it was posted in the open on everyone's userinfo page for quite a while. This was a stunningly stupid thing to do on LJ's part; that's how little email addresses get harvested by big, mean web-trawling bots." There are other things listed in that thread you can do to be double sure it doesn't happen to you.
And everything I know pretty much I was taught by Great Google-fu Master of us All luxetumbra who finds these workarounds for me when I come crying to her.
