Lying on my back is about as good as it gets, but there's still pain even then.

Oy, that is not fun. My father had a herniated disk bad enough that he couldn't get out of bed. He did require surgery. The good news was that it definitively fixed the problem and the scar was amazingly small. I hope such measures are unnecessary for you to get better!
