“Brace for impact!” Jack shouted.
Ianto leaned back in his seat, letting its contours cradle him protectively. “Are we crashing?”
“No, just… landing a little faster than I’d prefer. Don’t worry about it. And try not to tense up too much; you don’t want to break anything.”
“No, I don’t, but you said to brace…” Ianto shut his eyes; the surface of the planet was approaching with an uncomfortable rapidity, and they were heading right for it.
“Plant your feet on the floor but relax your legs. Arms at your sides. Engage crash webbing,” Jack instructed, his voice surprisingly calm.
“Right. Yes. I can do that.” Ianto hit the switch for webbing deployment, keeping still as it wrapped around him. “What about you?”
“Can’t reach the controls if I’m webbed in.” Jack’s hands were working with swift precision, his head turning back and forth as he checked the readings on the various instruments. Speed, angle of descent, distance to the surface… “Coming in hot!” Jack pulled back on the joystick as the shuttle dropped towards a grassy plain and hit the ground with a bone-jarring thump.
Ianto blinked. “We’re still in one piece?”
“Did you doubt me?”
“Just a bit.”
