Sneakers would probably be more sensible to wear on patrol, but Buffy can hardly tell her mom that she’s going out to spend half the night wandering the streets looking for vampires to slay. She’s supposed to be going to The Bronze with her friends, so strappy sandals it is. Besides, they make her legs look really good, long and slim. She checks her appearance in her full-length mirror, picks up her jacket and purse, with its cunningly concealed stake, and makes her way down the stairs.

“Don’t you look lovely.” Her mom smiles at her. “Do you need a ride?”

“No, I’m fine, mom. It’s not far, and anyway, I’m meeting Willow and Xander.” It’s not entirely a lie, she really has arranged to meet them later, but patrol comes first tonight.

“Well, have fun and don’t stay out too late.”

“I won’t.” Buffy crosses her fingers behind her back, hoping that will bring her luck, then she’s out the front door before her mom can ask any more questions.

“Have you got your key?”

Okay, one more question. “Yes, mom. See you later!”

Her heels click on the sidewalk, and she briefly imagines herself as a catwalk model, showing off the latest fall fashions. It makes her smile, but her happiness doesn’t last long. Half an hour later, and she’s battling two vampires at the same time, bringing one solid heel down on an instep, then bruising the toes of her other foot on the second vamp’s chin, snapping his head back so hard that he bites his own tongue.

The fight doesn’t last long, she stakes the first vampire and when she turns around, the other one is gone, swallowed up by the darkness, but the whole thing has put a damper on the evening. However good strappy sandals make her look, they’re far from ideal as slaying attire. One strap has broken; they don’t make shoes the way they used to.

How is she going to explain the damage to her mom? Okay, it’s not like she doesn’t have plenty of other shoes; her dad overcompensated a bit when she stayed with him over the summer break. Still, even though her dad paid for these shoes, her mom won’t be happy with her for ruining them. Maybe she can fix them. Buffy examines the broken strap and sighs. No, probably not.

“Should’ve worn sneakers after all.”
