As soon as they arrived at the dog park, Dick spotted his best doggy friend and started pulling on his leash, whining eagerly. Dee stooped, unclipping the leash and grinning as the miniature dachshund bounded away across the grass, meeting Reggie the golden retriever, who was still pretty spry despite his advancing years, halfway.
The two dogs raced away together, Dick nipping back and forth under his much larger friend, tongue lolling in a doggy laugh. Dee was laughing too; it was always entertaining watching the mismatched pair playing.
“On your own today?” a familiar voice said behind him, and Dee turned to smile at Marsha, one of Reggie’s owners.
“Yeah, Ryo’s in court today. Trial got moved up.”
“Ooof!” Marsha pulled a face. “Beautiful day like this, and he’s stuck indoors. Bet he’s loving that.”
“Yeah, he’s not happy, but hopefully he’ll get called to testify early, and won’t haveta sit around all day waitin’ like the last time. If he’s done before lunch, we can maybe salvage at least part of our day off.”
Just then, Dick and Reggie came bounding up, the dachshund pawing at his temporary owner’s leg.
“Say please,” Dee prompted.
Dick sat up and begged. “Woof!”
“Good dog.” Taking Dick’s ball out of his pocket, he paused, both dogs bouncing in place, tails wagging madly with excitement, eyes fixed on his hands. Drawing his arm back, he threw the ball as hard as he could, and the two dogs were away, tearing after it, Dick somehow managing to keep pace with Reggie despite his much shorter legs.
“You’ve got him well trained,” Marsha observed.
Dee shrugged. “Can’t take all the credit. I’ve taught him a few tricks, but he already knew the basics. Long as he’s happy and healthy, I figure we’re doin’ okay.
