A/N: Quadruple drabble.

Actions have consequences, that’s something Buffy learned in the most painful way possible, turning her lover into a soulless monster who went on a killing spree, then having to kill him to save the world even though his soul had been restored. For the second time in her life, she’d felt like a murderer, although the first time hadn’t really counted, since Ted turned out to be a robot and hadn’t been dead anyway. The second time though…

She’d killed the man she loved, and even though she knew there’d been no other choice, she didn’t think the guilt would ever go away. That was partly why she was so determined to look after Angel and help him heal. She’d done this to him. Not directly, she hadn’t been the one to torture him for who knew how long, until he was hardly more than a mindless animal, but she’d sent him to the Hell dimension. She owed him.

But hiding him from her friends had consequences too. They were so angry with her when they found out, and she knew she’d betrayed their trust, but what else was she supposed to do? She’d been pulled in all directions at once, torn between her loyalty to her friends and her ex-lover… If she’d told Giles and the others that Angel was back, they would have tried to kill him. They did anyway; all she succeeded in doing was delaying their attempt at retribution.

Okay, Buffy didn’t deny that Angelus did horrible things, but Angel didn’t deserve to be punished for things he didn’t remember, things he hadn’t been responsible for. It wasn’t fair; they were two different people, they just happened to share the same body.

If Angelus could have been destroyed without harming Angel, Buffy would have jumped at the chance, and she knew Angel would have too. His dearest wish was to be free of the demon that inhabited his body, but if there was a way to do that, none of her friends knew of it, not even Giles.

Actions had consequences, but hadn’t Angel already suffered enough for the actions of his alter ego? Hadn’t Buffy suffered enough for the lapse of judgement that had caused Angel to lose his soul in the first place? No one had told her or Angel what might happen, so was it even their fault? Wouldn’t they ever be forgiven?
