The only reason Ryo had agreed to work on Christmas Eve had been to keep himself busy. The more he had to do, the less time he had available for dwelling on the Christmas, ten years ago now, when he’d lost both of his parents. These days he usually spent Christmas with his aunt and uncle, or he’d hang out with friends, but a few months ago he’d been reassigned to a new precinct; he’d figured all his new colleagues would have plans of their own, so…
Maybe he should have tried harder to make the apartment look and feel festive instead of foisting his foster son off on someone else, but he’d already decided to work, and he couldn’t leave a not quite eleven-year-old home alone on Christmas. He’d figured Bikky would be better off spending the night with Carol and her aunt, so he’d at least have fun.
Only then Dee had been mad at him for volunteering to work, even though he’d never said a word to Ryo about including his partner in his Christmas plans. And then work had kinda fizzled out, meaning he’d gotten sent home early, which was the last thing he’d wanted.
That was why he was sitting here in his bleak, undecorated apartment, feeling lonely and depressed, his thoughts drifting once again to that other Christmas Eve he’d spent all alone, back when he was barely eighteen and had just lost the two people who’d meant everything to him.
He was so sunk in misery that he didn’t even hear Dee arrive, but when his bedroom door opened and his partner came in, his spirits soared.
It might not be his best Christmas ever, but despite getting off to a bad start, it was turning out a lot better than he’d expected.
