“Congratulations,” Ianto said with a smirk. “You’ve just discovered that all actions, however well-intended, can have unexpected consequences.”
“Well,” Jack said, picking himself up and grimacing, “we all live and learn. Nobody’s perfect.”
“Never thought I’d hear you admit that.”
“Hey, it’s a big universe! Just because I’m a time-travelling immortal doesn’t mean I know everything out there; that’s your job, although I notice you didn’t try to stop me.”
“Would it have made any difference if I had? Once you decide you’re going to do something, you do it.”
“True.”
“Besides, I never claimed to know everything about creatures from other planets. I only know what I’ve read in Torchwood’s archives, and they’re limited to the species that have already been encountered, which doesn’t include whatever that was. Now, thanks to you, we’re not likely to find out.”
“You make it sound like I killed it on purpose!” Jack protested. “All I did was pat it and try to pick it up. Maybe it was booby-trapped!”
“Why would anyone booby-trap a living creature? No, don’t answer that; I don’t think I want to know.”
“All I’m saying is, if I’d known it would explode, I wouldn’t have touched it.”
