“You were lucky, Detective Laytner,” the doctor told Dee after examining him and looking at the x-ray. “Your ankle isn’t broken; you just have a severe sprain. I’ll get a nurse to strap it up for you, but you should keep it elevated, ice it regularly, and take painkillers as needed.”
“Thanks, doc.” Dee gazed morosely at his puffily swollen ankle, which was already turning interesting colours. It was a relief that it wasn’t broken, but it didn’t make him feel any less of an idiot. “It’s usually my partner this kinda stuff happens to,” he grumbled. “He’s the accident prone one, not me, but the one time I’m tryin’ to be clever, and this happens.”
“What exactly did you do?”
“We were lookin’ for a suspect in a homicide. He’d holed up in an abandoned buildin’, locked himself in an office, and I tried to kick the door down. The wood was so rotten my foot went straight through, and when I tried to pull it out the whole door came off its hinges and fell on me. The suspect ran straight over me, and he would’a gotten away if my partner hadn’t been there. Not my finest moment.”
