Since the Rift was in a slow phase, Ianto and Jack had taken the opportunity to invite the rest of the team over for dinner. Gwen and Rhys were the first to arrive, but when Ianto answered the door to them, he got a very odd look from Gwen.
“Oh, did we get the day wrong?” she asked uncertainly. “Or are we too early?” Beside her, Rhys, clutching a bottle of wine, shuffled his feet awkwardly.
Ianto was puzzled. “No, you’re right on time. Tosh and Owen should be here shortly. Please, come in.”
“Are you sure it’s alright?”
“Why wouldn’t it be?” Ianto stepped back and gestured for them to enter.
“Um, well, it looked like we might have interrupted something.” Blushing, Gwen pointed at what Ianto had in his hand.
“Oh, no.” Ianto grinned. “Jack insisted on getting everything set up for later.”
Now it was Rhys who looked worried. “Set up?”
Ianto smiled reassuringly and waved the paddle. “Ever since he bought all the equipment at a charity shop, he’s been itching for a chance to challenge everyone to a table tennis tournament.” He raised an eyebrow at Gwen. “Why, what did you think this was for?”
