Janet had always enjoyed gossip, both listening to it and spreading it. She loved nothing better than hearing all the juicy details about other people’s relationships and the latest scandals, and since she worked on the desk at a police precinct, she got to hear a lot of interesting stuff. Some of it she had to keep quiet about, in particular anything she overheard about open cases, but she considered her colleagues’ private lives fair game. After all, if they wanted to keep their business private then they shouldn’t talk about it where she could hear them. It wasn’t like they don’t know she was a gossip.

Of course, some of her colleagues were more secretive than others, which just made them all the more fascinating. She listened extra hard when they were around, in the hopes that this time they just might let something juicy slip. She knew before anyone else that Officer Chelsea Dolan was pregnant, and that the baby wasn’t her boyfriend’s, and she was ready to express her condolences when Detective Jacobsen’s wife left him for some guy she met at the gym. Just because she liked to gossip didn’t mean she was without empathy.

Of all the people who worked in the twenty-seventh precinct, Detective Randy Maclean was the one she knew the least about, even though he’d been working there for almost two years. She knew he’d taken in an orphaned boy soon after joining the two-seven, but on a personal level that was about it. She’d flirted with him on his first day, even suggested he ask her out to dinner sometime, because who wouldn’t want to go out with him? He was gorgeous. But despite making it clear that she was interested, he’d never made a move.

She knew he was good at his job, perhaps a bit of a workaholic, and his partner, Detective Dee Laytner, definitely had the hots for him, but Randy obviously didn’t swing that way, judging by his reaction whenever Dee hit on him. Janet had come to the conclusion that Dee continued his ‘pursuit’ simply because it got his usually level-headed partner riled up. Dee was the kind of man who enjoyed playing pranks and pushing people’s buttons. He no doubt thought he was being funny, although Randy would probably disagree, yet despite Dee’s behaviour, the two detectives seemed to get along well. They certainly made an effective partnership, judging by the number of cases they solved.

Janet didn’t know where most of the two-seven’s personnel lived, and honestly didn’t care to find out; she was a gossip, not a stalker, and while she enjoyed telling her friends about the people she worked with, and those they arrested, she had no interest in getting more personally involved in their lives. Well, aside from the cute ones, like Randy, who she wouldn’t turn down if they asked her out. She preferred to see them all as characters in her real-life soap opera, entertainment during those tedious times at work when she didn’t have much to do.

New York was a big city, home to several million people, so outside of work it was rare for her to run into anyone she knew from the precinct. Tonight though, as she was trying to flag down a taxi following an evening out with some of her girlfriends, she spotted two familiar figures leaving a restaurant. At first she wondered if they were investigating a case, even though the restaurant was outside the two-seven’s jurisdiction, but then she remembered seeing Dee and Randy leaving after their shift and heading off in different directions. Perhaps it was a chance meeting, or…

Janet’s thoughts trailed off and she blinked in surprise as Randy reached up to kiss Dee on the lips, then hand in hand they strolled off along the sidewalk, talking and laughing.

“Well I never.” Janet grinned to herself. “Who would have guessed?” She watched the two men until they were out of sight before waving to a passing yellow cab. As it pulled up in front of her and she slid into the backseat, she wondered who she should tell about this exciting little discovery, then she shook her head. No, that wouldn’t be right; they’d gone to such pains to keep their relationship secret from everyone they worked with, and they looked so happy together… She didn’t want to do or say anything that might jeopardise what they’d found.

Besides, while discussing the salacious details of other people’s lives and relationships with her friends was a lot of fun, sometimes it was nice just to know a secret nobody else had a clue about. This was one bit of gossip she was keeping firmly to herself.

The End
