“When you told me you were taking me away from it all for the day, this isn’t what I was expecting,” Ianto admitted as he sat in the bows of the small boat while Jack rowed them up a slow-moving river in the warm sunshine. Weeping willows trailed their branches in the water, dragonflies flitted around them, and an occasional flotilla of ducks glided gracefully past.
“Not disappointed, are you?” Jack asked, dipping the oars and pulling on them in a long, smooth stroke. He’d obviously done this before.
“Not in the least; it’s wonderful.” Ianto smiled at his lover, enjoying the opportunity to simply relax for once.
“There’s a perfect spot for a picnic a mile or so upstream. We can spend the afternoon there, watching the world go by, then later on I’ll row us back to our starting point.”
It really was a delightful day out. Everything went without a hitch until it was time to head back downriver.
“Um, you know that saying about being up the creek without a paddle?”
“Yes…”
“I’ve lost one of the oars.” It was already floating out of reach.
Ianto sighed. “Tide’s turned. It’ll probably get back before we do.”
