Dee straightened his shoulders, standing as tall as he could, grinning widely. It felt amazing to be marching alongside his gorgeous lover in New York’s Pride Parade, especially since last year they’d had to work, mingling with the crowds, helping to prevent trouble.
This year it was JJ and Drake’s turn to work, one of the benefits of having two gay/bisexual couples on the squad. They could take turns, one year on duty for Pride and the next taking part.
What made it even better was that the two couples no longer needed to hide their relationships since the NYPD’s rules against fraternisation had been deemed unconstitutional. Anyone in a romantic relationship with their work partner was expected to attend monthly therapy sessions designed to keep relationship issues from interfering with their ability to do their job, but over the last eighteen months since the rules had changed, a surprising number of working relationships had gained a new stability.
Turning towards his partner, Dee squeezed Ryo’s hand. “Having fun?”
Ryo nodded. “How could anyone not? Look at the crowds! Everyone looks so happy!”
“Well, not everyone; I’ve spotted a few sour faces.”
“There’re always going to be people wanting to stir up trouble, prejudice, and discrimination against us, but no matter how hard they try, they’re never going to stop us from being who we are and standing up for our rights.”
“Damn right! We’re here, and we’re not gonna be silenced. Someday historians will look back and wonder why so much hate was directed at us just because of who we love. There’ll be no more homophobia or transphobia, no more lies bein’ spread about us, no more talk of groomin’ kids. We’ll be treated just the same as everyone else.”
“I hope we live to see that day.”
