“There’s got to be an easier way up,” Owen gasped, pausing on the steep path winding its way to the top of the ridge.
Ianto glanced back over his shoulder from further up. “This IS the easy way, Owen, but you’re welcome to try climbing straight up the slope.”
Glancing off to the side of the path, Owen shuddered and continued to trudge in Ianto’s wake, panting with exertion. “Why’d I even have to come? Everyone knows I hate the countryside.”
Unseen by Owen, who was too focused on where he was putting his feet to notice much of anything, Ianto rolled his eyes.
“Because this far from the Hub it’s safer to have backup.”
“Why not Jack, or Gwen?”
“Jack has a scheduled phone conference with the new PM, and Gwen’s busy with wedding planning.” Neither man mentioned Tosh, whose sprained ankle automatically eliminated her from consideration. “That left you. Besides, your medical expertise might be required.”
Owen paused again, adjusting the straps of his backpack. “How much further?”
“Just over the ridge and down the other side. The signal’s coming from somewhere in the valley. Be careful on the way down; that side’s a bit steep.”
Owen groaned.
