“Don’t get me wrong, I love what I do, it’s all I ever wanted, and I know how lucky I am. Most kids never get to live out their dreams.” Bikky leaned back on the sofa, stretching long legs out across the floor.
“I’m sensing a ‘but’.” Ryo grinned at his foster son, no longer the small boy he’d taken in fifteen years ago, but instead a strapping six feet seven inches, his presence making the apartment seem much smaller than it was.
“Sometimes I wish I wasn’t so easily recognisable.” Bikky grinned sheepishly. “All those years growing up, longing for fame and fortune, and now here I am, wishing I could sink into obscurity. Not all the time,” he added hurriedly. “Just now and then, so I could shop for groceries without being mobbed by fans wanting photos and autographs, or take Carol to the movies, or even visit you guys without having to sneak out the back door of a hotel I’m not even staying at and hide under a blanket in the back of your car.”
“That was your idea,” Dee pointed out, leaning against the breakfast bar, sipping coffee.
“Didn’t think your neighbors would appreciate having the paparazzi camping out in the lobby, hoping to catch a glimpse of me. It was worth it to get here without being seen.” Bikky looked around. “Place looks a lot smaller than I remember.”
Ryo laughed. “That would be because you’ve grown since you were last in New York.”
“Yeah, well, pretty sure I’ve stopped now.” Bikky grinned. “You did tell me if I drank my milk and ate all my veggies, I’d grow big and strong. Guess you were right. Which is great for playing basketball, but not so good for going unnoticed. Being famous has its downsides.”
