“You’re not bringin’ that monstrosity with ya, are ya?” Dee eyed the object Ryo was holding with a grimace of distaste.
“It’s an antique.” Ryo bundled the figurine carefully in bubble wrap before putting it in a sturdy wooden box, ready for transportation to Dee’s apartment.
“So what? It’s an eyesore. Look, I’m fine with ya bringin’ whatever ya want, long as ya bring yourself, but I don’t see why we gotta have somethin’ like that on display. Can’t ya shove it in storage if ya haveta keep it?”
Ryo sighed, sitting back on his heels. “My dad bought it for my mom as an anniversary gift, a few months before they died.”
“Oh.” Now Dee felt like a complete bastard. “Guess I can understand why you’d wanna keep it around then. Sentimental value.”
“Not just sentimental. I had it valued a few years ago; it’s quite rare, worth about ten grand according to the valuer.”
“Shit! And you had it on display here with the kid around?”
“It’s insured, and it was locked in the cabinet in the corner, out of the way. I thought I should have it where it could be seen.” Ryo smiled wryly. “It is ugly though.” He looked up at Dee. “Maybe we could just leave it wrapped up in the back of the closet. As long as I know it’s there and safe, I don’t need to see it all the time.”
“If you’re gonna do that, ya might wanna wrap it up a bit more, just to be safe,” Dee suggested, handing over another sheet of bubble wrap. “Wouldn’t want anything bad happenin’ to it. And put a label on the crate, so we know what’s in there. That way we’ll treat it with the care it deserves.”
Ryo smiled. “Thanks, Dee.”
