Willow picked up the stake and stared at it, a thoughtful frown furrowing her forehead. It was just a piece of wood, part of a small tree branch, sharpened to a point at one end, and yet it was the best weapon to use against a demonic creature faster and stronger than any normal human.

What was more, that simple piece of wood wouldn’t just kill a vampire. One thrust through the heart and poof, all that was left was a cloud of dust. It went against everything she knew about physics, biology, and chemistry, but it worked.

“Why?” she asked. “And how?”

“Huh?” Buffy looked up from her books, spread across the library table.

“How can something so ordinary turn a vamp into dust? It doesn’t make any sense.” Willow dropped heavily into the chair next to Buffy’s. She’d been friends with the Slayer long enough to have seen several vamps dusted, but even after a couple of months she still couldn’t get her head around it. Vampires were real, and Buffy killed them by poking them with sticks. It would’ve been laughable if it weren’t so scary.

“No idea how, Will.” Buffy smiled. “Just be glad it works.”
