Time and maturity were changing Bikky, which was a good thing. Looking back, he realised he’d been kind of a brat when Ryo had first taken him in, and if he was honest, for quite a few years after. Now he was back in New York after his first semester at college, and he had to admit the time away had done him good, giving him the space he needed to reflect on a lot of things. He’d gained a new perspective from living in L.A. and hanging out with such a diverse crowd of people.

Following Ryo inside, he paused to kick off his shoes, put his bag down, and looked around. This wasn’t where he’d lived before leaving for college; since then, Ryo had moved in with Dee, whose apartment was now twice the size it had been. It wasn’t Bikky’s home, not yet, and it might never be, at least not the way the apartment he’d shared with Ryo had been, but despite how he’d behaved towards his foster father’s partner, there was still a place here for him.

“I like what you’ve done with this place, it looks great, very roomy,” he told Dee as he took everything in.

Dee seemed surprised. “Yeah?”

Bikky nodded. “It’s pretty cool. Did you do it all yourself?”

“Not all of it,” Dee admitted. “Some friends in construction gave me a hand with the structural stuff, and the gas and electrics, then me and Ryo did all the decoratin’, but I did most of the plumbin’, plasterin’, and carpentry myself.”

“So if you ever decide to stop being a cop, you’ve got other skills you can fall back on.”

“I guess. Not plannin’ on retirin’ from the force anytime soon though.”

“That’s good. Now I’m mostly living at the other end of the country, I feel better knowing Ryo’s got you watching his back. I know I can trust you to take care of him.”

Dee half smiled. “Never thought I’d hear ya say that.”

“Never thought I’d say it. Let’s just say I’ve done a lot of thinking over the past few months. I know I was a brat growing up, but I’m not that kid anymore, competing for Ryo’s attention, so how about a truce? I’ll try to do better in future.”

“That works for me. Y’know, Ryo did a good job raisin’ you. You turned out okay.”

The End
