When her alarm clock went off, Buffy just lay there staring at it, her mind whirling with doubts and fears. She felt like she’d barely slept, dozing off briefly only to be jolted back to wakefulness by another horrible nightmare.
She couldn’t do this, and she shouldn’t have to; she was nineteen, hardly more than a child herself! She ruthlessly repressed the voice of her conscience reminding her that girls younger than her became parents, and they had to deal with babies waking them at all hours of the night. All she had to do was take care of her younger sister, who was already a teenager and mostly self-sufficient.
That wasn’t entirely true though, there was more to being the adult in the family than just keeping her sister alive, making sure she got to school on time, and that she did her homework. The laundry was piling up again, even though she’d only just finished ironing the last lot, the floors needed vacuuming and there was a layer of dust on the furniture. She had two bills due and wasn’t sure she had enough money for both, and on top of that, Dawn had eaten the last of the cereal and milk for supper last night. Buffy would have to go grocery shopping later on, but what about breakfast?
How had her mom managed, raising Buffy by herself after the divorce? She’d always seemed to know what she was doing, at least when it came to running a household. Buffy had been able to count on having clean clothes, and plenty of choices for breakfast. This morning it would have to be black coffee and toast, unless they were out of bread as well.
Turning the alarm clock off, Buffy slowly sat up. This was her life now.
