Before meeting Ryo, Dee had never given much thought to boats. He’d occasionally taken dates on the boating lake in Central Park, but the closest to being at sea he ever got was the Staten Island ferry.

Ryo had introduced him to the delights afforded by different kinds of boats, first taking him and Bikky white-water kayaking, then renting a cabin cruiser for a long weekend on the ocean wave. Dee had been a little nervous about that; bobbing about on a lake or a river was one thing, but sailing a small boat out into the vast expanse of the Atlantic had seemed more than a little crazy. To his surprise though, he'd taken to the boating life like a duck to water, pun intended.

Since that first trip, Bikky had grown up, graduated college, been drafted into the NBA, and started making serious amounts of money. Thanks to the kid’s newfound wealth, Dee and Ryo were now the proud owners of a cabin cruiser of their own, bought and paid for by Victor Goldman Maclean, basketball star.

“Everything okay?” Ryo came to stand beside Dee, who was leaning on the forward rail, watching the sunlight dancing on the water.

“Better than okay.” Dee turned to grin at his lover. “Just thinkin’ how lucky we are that we get to do this.”

“It is pretty amazing,” Ryo agreed, leaning on the rail beside him.

“Thank you.”

“Huh? What for?”

“For openin’ up a whole new world to me. The kayakin’ trips, this…” Dee trailed off, gesturing around them at the ocean, the sky, the deck beneath their feet. “I’d have never tried any of it if you hadn’t come along. Just think of all I would’a missed, without ever knowin’.”

Water had come to feel like Dee’s natural element.

The End
