“This seems so weird,” Ianto said, standing behind Jack and watching his lover plug various cables and hoses into the sockets concealed behind a panel on the Happy Wanderer’s hull.
Jack glanced back over his shoulder. “What does? Being on a space station eighty-five light years from earth?”
“No. Well, yes, that too, but… What you’re doing, plugging in a spaceship the size of the Millennium Centre to recharge like it’s a laptop or one of those electric buggies.”
“We’re not just recharging the electrical systems. We’re emptying and flushing out the waste tanks, refilling the water tanks, putting the air through a filtration and purification system, and taking on liquid fuel.”
“What happens if you plug the wrong hose into the wrong socket?”
“Can’t happen. They’re all different sizes, and there are failsafes in the event that a ship’s sockets aren’t the standard size. Plus everything’s labelled with universal symbols so it’s just a case of connecting the ones that match. I’ve never heard of anyone making a mistake.”
“That’s reassuring. Still seems weird though. I suppose I never thought of spaceships having to refuel at a filling station.”
Jack laughed. “Nothing can run without fuel, not even people.”
