Someone’s shaking him, a rough hand shoving at his shoulder, and Danny snaps awake, flailing a bit, still in the grip of his recurring nightmare.
“No, get ‘em off me, get ‘em off!”
“Hey, easy, it’s just me.” Steve’s voice, soothing and reassuring, brings Danny back to the real world and he calms down, the pounding of his heart gradually slowing as he breathes deeply.
“Just you. Right. Am I supposed to be happy about that?” It’s Steve’s fault they ended up on this couples retreat in the first place, and they’re stuck sharing a room.
“You okay?”
“Yeah, sure, just a dream. No big deal.” Danny’s trying to convince himself as much as Steve, but he’s not sure either of them believe it.
“Must’ve been a pretty scary one the way you were yelling. You wanna talk about it?”
Dumb question. “Not particularly, no.”
“Might help.”
Danny huffs in exasperation; Steve is a good friend, mostly, but there are times when his persistence makes Danny want to strangle him. “I said no. What I wanna do is get some sleep.” He rolls onto his side, his back to his friend, and closes his eyes. Hopefully that will put an end to the conversation because no way is he telling Steve about his dream. It would be humiliating; he knows Steve would laugh his ass off, and then probably tell everyone he knows.
Getting back to sleep is harder than it should be. Danny’s tired, but he doesn’t want to get sucked back into the nightmare. Pineapples shouldn’t be that scary, they’re just fruit, he sees them everywhere he goes, but maybe that’s the problem. All those knobbly, pointy bits, and the sharp leaves with their serrated edges… add beady, malevolent eyes, and the way they creep around, stalking him in his dreams, popping up whenever he’s alone, intent on eating him… He represses a shudder. He lives in Hawaii and he’s fast becoming pineapple-phobic; that can’t be good.
