Earth is amazing; the technology is beyond anything Jonas ever imagined. He’d thought his planet was pretty advanced, technologically speaking, but now he’s here he’s learning just how wrong he was. Computers are incredible, they’re so small and they can do practically anything, and then there’s television. Five hundred channels, with shows on every conceivable subject, and some things his people would never have thought of. There are fictional dramas of course, but he’s more interested in the factual. One of the reasons he’s here is to learn, after all. There are entire channels devoted to everything from world news to sport to science to cookery… Everything you could possibly want to know about the planet and its people is right there, accessible at the click of a button. It’s mind-blowing, as the locals would say.

The weather channel is his favourite though; he could spend all day watching it. In fact he has, more than once. It’s got it all, weather from every corner of the planet, right there, all in one place. Want to know if it’s raining in Colorado, or Nevada, or Florida? The weather channel can tell you, and it’s not just restricted to the United States of America; it’s everywhere, the whole planet! Wherever you happen to be, you can check the weather anywhere else. England, say, or Norway, or Lithuania… There are dozens of countries, hundreds, but no matter which one you’re interested in, you can turn on the weather channel and find out if the people there are having a sunny day, or a heavy snowfall, or high winds… it’s fantastic!

That’s not even the best part though, because it doesn’t just tell you what the weather’s like now, but what it will be like tomorrow, or next week, or a month from now! How amazing is that? It’s a source of endless fascination to Jonas, like… predicting the future or something. Sure, it’s all down to science, but it’s a science his own planet hasn’t mastered, not the way earth has.

His people could learn so much from earth; it’s a shame they’ll probably never get a chance since all three nations are hell-bent on inventing bigger and more destructive weapons to defend themselves from each other. If they keep that up, they’ll wipe each other out of existence and then there’ll be no one left to learn all the things humans could teach them, they’ll never have the advantage of knowing in advance when to expect rain, or snow, or a drought. As much as he likes to be surprised, there are definite advantages to knowing what to expect from the weather, not least being able to dress accordingly.

He doesn’t think he’ll ever tire of it.

The End
