Jack had been beyond angry at Ianto’s betrayal. Against his better judgement, he’d trusted the young Torchwood One survivor, had welcomed him into the Hub, given him a job, allowed him unrestricted access to all areas, and how had his generosity been repaid? With a Cyberman, that’s how! If he and the rest of his team hadn’t managed to stop the half-converted abomination, it could have destroyed the entire human race, converting or deleting every person on the planet!
Part of his rage had been born of fear because Jack had seen first-hand what Cybermen could do. He’d been angry at himself as well, for letting his guard down in favour of a pretty face, for getting conned, for not seeing what was going on right under his nose. He’d been ready to execute his treacherous employee. Within the Torchwood Institute that had long been the accepted punishment for treason, and yet…
Ianto Jones was so young and so broken. After months of desperately trying to keep the woman he loved alive long enough to find some way of curing her, he’d had to witness her final death.
Looking at the shattered, grieving man, all Jack felt now was pity.
