Spaceships weren’t flimsy contraptions. They were constructed using the strongest, most durable metal and ceramic alloys ever invented, materials that could withstand practically anything space travel could throw at them. Beyond that, they were all equipped with shielding technology that could deflect space debris away from the hull.
But even with all those safeguards in place, they could still suffer damage. Some space-born particles were either too big or too small for the deflector shielding to cope with, and while passing a little too close to the tail of a rogue comet, the Happy Wanderer had developed several small holes.
Actually, ‘microscopic’ would probably be a more accurate description. At the speeds a spaceship travelled, even dust could cause damage. The holes were too small to see with the naked eye, but nonetheless the ship was leaking air and needed to be repaired fast.
Wearing spacesuits, just in case, Jack and Ianto had located the half-dozen tiny perforations.
“Okay, soon have these fixed.” Reaching for his tool belt, Jack unclipped what looked like an aerosol can.
“What’s that?”
“Sealant.” Jack grinned. “Spray it over the holes and it forms an impenetrable barrier.”
“So you’re basically gluing the ship together?”
“Yep!”
