When a traffic bulletin broke through on the local radio station they were listening to, warning of long tailbacks and delays of up to three hours, Dee groaned.

“Why is everythin’ against us? All we wanna do is get away from the city for a few days, breathe fresh air, and unwind. Instead we’re gonna be spendin’ half our precious time off stuck in traffic, goin’ precisely nowhere!”

“It’s not that bad.”

“Are you kiddin’? Didn’t you hear what they said? Delays of up to three hours! And you know it’s gonna wind up bein’ longer than that. Probably a pile-up somewhere ahead, or roadworks, ‘cause they’re always carried out when the Interstate’s jammed with traffic. I swear that’s deliberate.”

Beside Dee in the passenger seat, Ryo chuckled. “That’s a bit paranoid, don’t you think? Anyway, we don’t have to stay on the Interstate. There should be an exit coming up in maybe a quarter of a mile; we can get off there, take the backroads, maybe re-join I-87 the other side of Albany.”

“We’ll be dodgin’ all over the map!”

“It’s either that or being stuck in traffic for several hours. For someone who claims to want to get out into fresher air, you don’t seem too keen on leaving the traffic fumes behind. Or is it that you doubt my ability to read a map and get us where we want to go without following the main highways?”

“I never said that; it’s just the speed limit’s lower on the backroads so it’ll take us longer to reach the lake.”

“Longer than three hours or more stuck in barely moving traffic?”

“Okay, you have a point.” Dee signalled and changed lanes, making it all the way across just in time to take the exit. “I really hope you know where we are, ‘cause I’m not sure I do.”

“Relax, Dee. Even if we get a bit lost, what does it matter? We’re not booked in anywhere, which was your idea in case you’ve forgotten. We can stop anywhere we like the look of.”

“Even if it means we don’t get to the lake?”

“There’s more than one lake in the direction we’re heading.” Ryo had the map book open on his lap, finding their location and plotting a route to the Adirondacks. He grinned at his lover. “I thought you liked adventure.”

“I do, but I like it at the lake too. It’s pretty there, and we can go kayaking.”

“I’m sure plenty of other places offer kayaking. Anyway, we’ll probably still get there, just by a slightly more round-about route. At least this way we get to avoid delays.”

“Unless we get stuck in traffic somewhere else.”

“Stop being so pessimistic. This is supposed to be fun. Look around you; isn’t this better than staring up the tailpipe of the car in front for the next several hours?”

Dee looked out at rolling fields, the distant glint of a lake visible through some trees.

“Yeah, it is.”
