It was late; Ianto had been working down in the archives and had lost track of time. When he exited the stairwell, the Hub appeared deserted, the computers powered down and the lights dimmed, which made sense. The others had probably gone home hours ago, but there was still a light on in Jack’s office. Torchwood’s leader didn’t seem to sleep much, which Ianto could understand. He suffered from insomnia these days himself.
He knew Jack was still feeling down following the events of the previous week, and John Ellis’s inability to cope with being uprooted from his own time, so the loud bang sent Ianto running towards Jack’s office, not knowing what he might find when he got there. Surely Jack hadn’t shot himself!
“What the hell?”
Jack was standing on his desk, gun in hand, paperwork scattered on the floor. He looked up, startled.
“Ianto! I thought you’d gone home hours ago!”
“I heard a gunshot. What happened?”
“Oh. There was a spider…”
“Do you usually shoot spiders?”
“No, of course not! I’d just cleaned and reloaded my gun when I saw it. I jumped, and…”
“Your gun went off?”
“I’m scared to death of spiders,” Jack admitted.
