Living aboard a spaceship, unexpected noises were always a cause for concern. Ianto had been down in the holds, checking the cargo, something that was done regularly on long flights to ensure nothing had come loose from its restraints and was floating around loose. While the Happy Wanderer had artificial gravity throughout, it was seldom used in the uninhabited parts of the ship, in order to conserve power.
Everything had been secure, and he was humming cheerfully as he made his way back towards the flight deck, when something went bang.
Changing direction mid-stride, he headed in the direction the sound had come from, his mind racing. There were so many things that could have gone wrong. Had they hit something and damaged the hull? Had one of the ship’s many systems overloaded, causing an explosion? Were they being attacked? Maybe he should have gone to the flight deck after all…
He almost ran right into Jack as his lover stepped out of the Wanderer’s small fitness room.
“Did you hear it too, that loud bang? I’m not hearing any alarms, but…”
“It’s fine, Ianto, it was just me.”
“You?”
“I was lifting weights and one fell off the bar.”
