Sunnydale’s a small town, and quiet compared to L.A., which is both vast and always on the go, but that doesn’t mean Sunnydale’s slow. People live their lives the same way they do in the sprawling metropolis, travelling to and from work and school, shopping at the mall, going to the cinema, bowling, ice skating at the rink outside of town… In other words, there’s always traffic going back and forth, even quite late at night, which can cause a few problems for a Slayer trying not to get noticed for the wrong reasons.

The last thing Buffy needs is one of her mom’s friends or acquaintances spotting her fighting some big, green, warty guy in the middle of the street, and then regaling her mom with the story, or maybe calling the police, who might want to talk to people at her school about her violent tendencies. She might get kicked out of school again when she’s only just settled into life on the Hellmouth, and then she and her mom might have to move again.

Nevertheless, she is indeed fighting a big, green, warty demon right in the middle of the street, and the traffic’s starting to get backed up, and several people are leaning on their horns… This is SO not good, and Buffy doesn’t even have her sword with her, but thankfully Angel has a nifty battle-axe, and where he got that she doesn’t want to know, but it should do the trick.

If they can just persuade plug ugly to get out of the road, preferably back into the cemetery, away from their captive audience, that would be good.

A wild snatch at the amulets hanging around the demon’s neck nets her one, and then she’s running, the demon hard on her heels and Angel bringing up the rear. As Buffy vaults the cemetery wall, she can hear the traffic start moving again, driving away, and she wonders if the incident will be front page news in the local paper come morning.

Maybe not. The people of Sunnydale seem to be exceptionally good at not seeing the things they don’t want to see, like some sort of collective short-term memory problem. They see something weird, their brains refuse to accept it, and the next day they think they must have had a weird dream.

She supposes that’s better than a headline reading Slayer Bags Demon!
