Winter in New York was being particularly grim this year. It wasn’t even Christmas yet, but between the howling gales, sub-zero temperatures, and heavy snow, even the normally weather-resistant and snow-loving Bikky was reluctant to set foot outdoors unless he really had to.

Not that Ryo and Dee were any more enthusiastic. Going to work meant freezing their asses off just getting to and from the precinct, and that was before their job took them out onto the bitterly cold city streets to carry out their investigations into whatever crimes were being committed. Despite the current weather conditions, hardened criminals still seemed determined to continue with their stealing and murdering ways.

Since Ryo’s apartment was closer to the precinct than Dee’s, making the commute slightly less of an arctic trek, Dee had temporarily moved in with his lover, bringing with him enough clothes to last a couple of weeks, folded surprisingly neatly into a couple of large sports holdalls, wheeled suitcases being at a disadvantage in knee-deep snow. Bikky hadn’t been particularly pleased at the prospect of having his nemesis as a house guest for an extended period of time, but Ryo had pointed out that there was safety in numbers for their daily trek to work.

“If I fall into a snowdrift, Dee can pull me out. What? It could happen!”

“Plus we can keep each other warm at night,” Dee had added.

“Ew! I did NOT need to hear that!”

After a tense first few days, Bikky had settled into a grudging acceptance of Dee’s presence, mostly because it meant he could get out of some of his chores, leaving taking out the trash, folding laundry, and helping with the dishes to Dee. Now, a week in, he’d even stopped insisting that Dee keep his arms folded and his hands to himself when sitting with Ryo on the sofa.

Today was a Thursday, but the schools were closed because of the severer weather, and Dee and Ryo both had the day off, something they were especially thankful for because of the blizzard currently raging outside. With the blinds drawn, the lights on, and the heating turned up, the three were sitting around the coffee table, drinking hot chocolate, and playing whatever games they could think of.

Dee was losing. Again. He wasn’t sure whether Bikky and Ryo were deliberately ganging up on him, or whether the brat had simply come up with yet another inventive way of cheating, which wouldn’t surprise him. Bikky might be academically challenged, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t smart in his own way. Too smart for his own good sometimes.

Growling, Dee slammed his cards down.

“Okay, that’s it, I fold. I’m losin’ anyway, may as well quit while I’m already behind.”

Ryo frowned across at him. “You can’t fold, Dee; we’re playing snap, not poker!”

“So what? I’m down to eight cards, no way I’m gonna win.”

“I thought we were having fun.”

“It’s only fun when you’re not the one losin’.”
