A/N: Double drabble.
When he’d finally persuaded Captain Harkness to let him work for Torchwood Three, Ianto had been determined to maintain a certain distance between himself and his new colleagues. It was necessary for him to be as inconspicuous as possible; Lisa’s life depended on it. As long as he was efficient, polite, but otherwise uninteresting, he could move about the Hub without drawing unwanted attention.
He thought he’d succeeded, keeping interaction down to a minimum except when he needed to distract Jack, in which case he’d done what he could to maintain emotional distance, but now…
The metal monster that had once been Lisa was dead, he’d finally been allowed back to work after a month’s suspension, and Toshiko was bringing him coffee? She looked at him with such gentle concern and empathy, went out of her way to talk to him, no matter how awkward, stilted, and one-sided the conversation might be. She cared about him, taking pains to prove he wasn’t as alone as he felt.
It was disconcerting. After everything he’d done, betraying the people he worked with, almost getting them and everyone on the planet killed, how could she bring herself to treat him like a friend?
