[Audio] Backdated to earlier this week

[Returning to the Manor- correction: filthy, decrepit Manor- means one thing: The return of cabin fever. But it's slightly different this time. It is to Light's extreme delight that Mello's name has been taken off the Blackberry contact list (and is therefore dead again!), and that the Author has seen fit to comply with the removal of one owl-eyed ( Read more... )

[Audio in Return]

Should it, Light-kun? One place is as good as the other.

[[There's a rustling of belongings as he's undoubtedly stacking gross things in order of gross to least gross.]]

Checking up on me, are you?

[Light doesn't need the audio to guess what L is doing. He can see it clearly in his mind, as though L were present in front of him- which mercifully, happily, he isn't. Finally. Finally the Author had done something right. He's hoping things will continue along this trajectory, but he knows better than to hope for anything in the Manor.]

A joke, Ryuuzaki. You have yet to develop a sense of humor. And if I were, would it be improper of me?

[[Though Light's joy isn't exactly the same as L's at the moment (filling his OCD about stacking things is at least being taken care of), his voice is his usual monotone and straight laced. He's thinking a mile a minute behind the scuff sounds of his feet against the floor while he walks on the bottoms of his jeans.]]

Ah, my mistake then. I'll work on that.
[[He shrugs, realizing that Light can't see him.]]

No, we're friends, aren't we? Light-kun?

[No, you won't, you liar. But Light doesn't actually care. His comment had been pointless banter, anyway.]

Of course. [Light's turn to lie now, but L didn't need to know that.] I highly value your friendship. [It's true, to an extent. Light had thoroughly enjoyed their little game.] I had no idea it was reciprocated.

The formation of an official agency. Despite Hakuba-san's past efforts, the Manor still lacks proper infrastructure. I'd like to change that. Are you interested?

I think it's important to have some sort of legal system-but Hakuba is right. You can't demand respect, you have to earn it. You're familiar with the term 'Rome wasn't built in a day' I assume.

Unless we can prove our efforts aren't selfish then it'll be difficult to get anyone to support any kind of order or even cooperate.

Of course not. However, respect is more easily gained when there is unity. At the moment, we are all scattered; it's no wonder that the detectives of this place cannot command any respect. Structure will be essential if respect is to be gained at all, don't you think?

Should I be answering here, or is this something better handled in person?

In person would be more efficient. I would like to discuss creating an actual detective agency at the Manor, as the last attempt... well, we all know what happened. I'd like to hear your thoughts on the matter.

I'm certainly intrigued. Anywhere in particular you'd want to meet?

Anywhere will be fine with me. If you would prefer, I can go to your room.

[Oh Kira. You're not one for patience are you?

It's thinking time, which means Near is now twirling a strand of hair. This Yagami does not know who he is back in his world, but he has already met L. Otherwise, he would not have sent such a heavily encrypted text message in response to what Near assumed to be the L mask he wore that day he first arrived at the manor. Of course Kira must be curious to know just who Near is. He already knows of his connection to Mello, so there's a good chance he suspects him to be L's successor or at least in some ways connected to the Kira case. Was it merely coincidence that he decided to contact Near immediately after Mello's departure?

Well, in any case, there's at least satisfaction in knowing that Yagami was the first of them to break and contact the other.]

Of course we are. [Nearspeak translation: "Your assumption's so obvious it's retarded."] We've spoken before after all.

["He who attacks first will always win." In as much as Light is able to play the waiting game--and rather skillfully as well, as that is essentially what his ingenious plan had turned out to be even if his idiot memory less self had never figured it out--he'd rather seize this moment to speak to Near. Light may not have been able to confirm Near's relationship with Mello, but on the other hand, he had not been able to exclude it as a possibility either.

The fact remains, however, that the Author herself has eliminated one possible advantage Near has. The conclusion, then is that Light would be quite stupid not to take this chance ( ... )

[Yeah, Near totally does not buy the "he who attacks first wins" philosophy.

If this Yagami already knows that Near is from his future, then revealing a date shouldn't cost Near anything unless Mello had mentioned specific events to Yagami in the past. However, he trusts that Mello would not have been that careless as to just spill everything. Near could have given a straightforward answer then. There's no reason not to tell the date, but where's the fun in that?]

Heh. The author has control over different worlds and time frames, different versions of the same people and perhaps different dimensions of their realities. That the dates of my world corresponds to those of yours is as arbitrary an assumption as any.

[There's some clattering noise in the background as Near digs through a pile of robot parts. Upon returning to the manor from alien planet week, his old toys have mostly fallen apart.]

I wonder. What could Light Yagami possibly hope to gain from asking such a trivial question?

[It's times like these when Light wonders what the hell L had been thinking in considering Mello as a prospective candidate to his title, when he already had more or less a clone sitting right in front of him. The similarities are disturbingly numerous; numerous enough that he wouldn't have been shocked to learn that the Wammy House is actually a secret genetic research facility. He makes a note to ask L about the facility. The silver lining of L's presence at the Manor- or rather, this particular L's presence- is that this one seems dim-witted enough to actually tell Light about it. Light could even throw in a few declarations of their friendship to reinforce L's compliance. It would be like training a dog. Maybe I can train L to fetch too.L aside, however, Near's flat tone, his penchant for playing games with little point, (Light wouldn't be surprised if that noise in the background was Near stacking those hideous puppets of his) all contribute to an almost nostalgic picture of what his relationship with L had been at home. With any ( ... )
