Not knowing the answer to a question isn't always a deal-breaker, as long as you're honest about it and don't try to blag or make shit up. The job I'm doing now, there were at least two questions I was asked where I just didn't have a clue and admitted so. And I got the job, so hey, can't have been that bad.
Having sat on interview panels myself, more often you're looking for how people respond, how open and personable they are, whether you think they can do the job, how they will fit with the existing team - far more than what they actually say. I guarantee five minutes after you left the room not one of the panel would be able to remember exactly what you said in response to questions but they'll remember how you said it and how you came across.
I found out yesterday than on Tuesday the other two temps were told they didn't get the job, and were given immediate notice of end of contract so I asked my manager where it stood for me. Apparently the job is all but mine, just waiting for the i's to be dotted, the t's to be crossed and some directors to sign some paperwork. Apparently, my interview blew all four of them away and they were very impressed with my answers, with how I came across... shows how much I know!
It's Birmingham based, heading down to London once or twice a week like I am now. So my original plan of 'live at mums a year and save a deposit' is still a go :)
