Sounds like it was an honest mistake. I mean if YOU didn't see the chili, how is she supposed to see it? Its not like she did it on purpose, she's new and perhaps didn't enter it into the system correctly but she had noted it and she did apologize and try to make a joke about the situation.

I really feel like you're overreacting here. It was an honest mistake. Also, ten minutes? Not a long time at a sit-down restaurant.

She apologized, you got your meal comped - even the new nachos that you ate, shit happens. She joked because it was an awkward situation and that's probably how she deals with awkward situations.

It's her first day, chill out. I'm a server, and sometimes things get by you, it happens. I've been vegetarian for nine years, and I try my very hardest to make sure anyone who expresses they are vegetarian doesn't end up with animal on their plate, but sometimes it's busy and things get past me. She did what I would have done, offered to comp and replace, and apologize.

On the other side as a customer, there have been times when I emphasized that I didn't eat meat, was vegetarian etc and when the server brings me food there is meat in it, and sometimes I get a mouthful before I realize- but people make mistakes, and I know that. I bring it to the servers attention, get a replacement, and move on with my life.

It's her first day, and I'm sure she felt terrible about it. The joke at the end was probably meant to be lighthearted and I'm sure it was her nervously trying to lighten the situation. People make mistakes, it sucks, but it happens.

In which case if she did not know, she should have said "let me check for you." It's bad service if it's her first day or her 100th. When I ask about ingredients it's because I'm allergic. Some people may even be vegetarian because of medical reasons and not because of personal choice.

Whoever trained her needs to be told that when they're training new staff, they need to emphasise "Listen up, if you do not know and someone makes a special request, CHECK. Ask someone, always, every single time."

Well to be fair, it's entirely possible she did put the order in right and the kitchen screwed up. If you didn't notice before you were chewing on it, it can't have been that obvious that there was chili on your nachos, so how was she supposed to notice? And really with the broccoli cheddar soup....I've made a lot of it, and I've never used chicken stock in it, and tbh I don't even understand why you would....

And really, your food took 10 minutes? I personally thing that's pretty damn good service, and I can't remember the last time I got food that fast at a restaurant.

From what she had said to us it sounded as if she was accountable for the mix up with the chili and I don't know if missing the chili was due to us dining outside at night with minimal lighting vs inside but I suppose you're right. And I've always ever received apps super quick when I dine at BJ's so perhaps I've just been extremely lucky. Ho hum.
