I don't have that much money, so I decide that I'd just get a snack and a very sugary, caffeine-loaded something to keep my brain awake. I go to the campus bookstore, get the aforementioned food, and go to check out

Agreed. That isn't the cashier's business and it's very rude and intrusive, nevermind judgemental. Employee needs more training or a reprimand.
