Well, no offense, but if you're feeding your pets such a low quality brand of food in the first place, you kind of are a bad pet owner. Your cat's failing health might have very well been a result of eating too much undigestable, unhealthy wheat and corn products, which MenuFoods pet foods are filled to the brim with. I'm not saying that the woman had a right to be rude to you, or that MenuFoods hasn't provided a bad service, but people are incredibly quick to blame others for problems that could very well be their own fault.
I do not feed my cats wet food on a regular basis. They all eat a low-protein dry food which is reccomended by my vet. But because I'm such a bad pet owner and spend ridiculous amounts of money on that food and brush all of them weekly amd play with them daily and all of that, I thought it was okay that I give my cat a can of wet food 2 or 3 times a month because he loves it so much. You're right. I'm a terrible pet owner. I'll go call the ASPCA on myself now.
You either don't own a cat or don't pay attention to the cost of cat food. When we still had our cat, we fed him Purina Indoor Cat food. It was the one the VET told us to feed him since we had no intention of letting him outside. It was fairly pricey (although not as pricey as the stuff they originally wanted us to feed him - even though the Purina actually gave him MORE of what they said he needed) but we felt it was worth a little sacrifice on our part to give him something he needed. For wet food, we gave him whatever generic brand was on sale at either PetCo or PetSmart, depending on where we went shopping. It wasn't because we were "bad pet owners". It was because we were "pet owners on a budget".
So please don't say someone is a bad pet owner just because they don't buy the OMGWTF expensive cat food. You have no real idea of what you're talking about in regards to that specific person and their pets.
Clearly, you have no real idea of the high cost of feeding "cheap" food - both in veterinary care of illnesses readily prevented by feeding a nutritionally sound, appropriate diet, and the fact that cats will eat less if given a better quality food. And if your vet actually advised feeding a cat food that has more corn than meat in it, you need to find a new vet, seriously.
I am a lurker here in the community and just want to give you a mighty /hug for all this. Ignore the igit who obvously can't think outside their tiny little box. You did nothing that any other catowner would have done in the same place.
I would just like to say that as a fellow cat owner, I appreciate your situation. My mom's cat wasn't lucky enough to make it through (she had some of the other recalled brands, and wasn't aware of the recall until a little while after it had happened) and I'm glad that yours was.
Also, please ignore the pathetic bastards trying to say it's your fault for not spending $5 per can of food. Their entitled behinds thinking everyone should spend as much money as they do on their pets daily does not mean anything at all to those of us who love our animals just as well. Trying to make yourself look better than another person when their cats have been poisoned? That's kinda low, and it really does say something that they had to wait for a sad situation like this to try and make themselves feel like they're worth something at all. *hug* I hope your kitty feels all better soon!
To be fair, a BARF/Raw foods diet can be a lot cheaper (in the long run) than the wet cat food and can be better than the canned stuff. Of course, all the "might be" type qualifiers are because it depends on how well the owner researches things and all that.
I'm not telling you that to rub it in or whatever, so please don't take it that way. Just sharing something about different types of food you can feed your pet if you're concerned about things like this.

But would you mind filling me in on backstory? This is news that didn't reach the UK.
