Where have all the villains gone?

Long time happening.
Where have all the villains gone,
Long time ago?

But seriously, this is irritating me to no end. I finally find a .hack RP, which is great, or, rather, it was. Now, however, I notice that there are no villains. What happened? We had plenty when I started, that's why I didn't play one myself. Believe me, I would have been more than ( Read more... )

I find that in a lot of these sorts of games, villains are sorely lacking in the long term. I've written about this recently in my own journal ( http://dave-littler.livejournal.com/132515.html ); everyone just wants to play the pretty, young protagonists who are friendly and want to be rewarded for being friendly with hot cyborsexxors.

It's always a shame, too: Good villains make for a good story, but when you've got two or three villains to fifty or so heroes, the villains will always be crippled and ineffective, which tends to demotivate people from creating or applying to play new ones. It's easy for a game built around conflict to go into a death spiral.

Personally, I'd like to the mods in a lot of these games get more picky about approving hero characters after a certain point, and more permissive where villains are concerned, so as to help level it out.

Perhaps you could take on a new character to use as a villain?

Those people who are able to play effective villains are generally curbed by the many inherent factors of long-term RPs, sadly.

Wait'll you get to the next phase, which is people running around randomly PKing and calling themselves 'good villains.' At least, that's what I've found seems to be the next one.

Pardon my ignorance, I have no idea what a .hack RP is. aerrin1 September 4 2010, 15:00:17 UTC
As a player of a villain, I find the game I write at lacks good villains more because the heroes want to RP happy fun times. We used to have a lot of really good villains, but now any plot the villains come up with to take over the world, kidnap the princess, or whatever they want to do to make the heroes' lives miserable suffers from lack of interest and eventually dies of stagnation. I've had a couple of my plots go that way.

I've talked to people about it. It still happens. And you know? When my hero-kid suggested a plot, everyone jumped on the bandwagon. He was joining an NPC band, and yet I had 5 female characters that wanted to be lead singer and one that wanted to be a love interest (woah, woah, there chica, he's underage). It was crazy.

I don't want to RP happy fun times. Give me fires! Give me floods! Give me earthquakes! Or, you know, something to keep the happy, married, pregnant couples away. Do not want.

.hack is a manga. Maybe also an anime. I don't remember.
