Pardon Me, Here's My Life Story

I figured you guys'd enjoy this. In this game, there's Fighter Girl.
Fighter Girl is unique in lots of ways that squick me, but my favorite one is how she treats her past.
She murdered her parents in a house fire because daddy was abusive and mommy was crazy. Mentally ill. So nobody saved her, so she murdered them.

What's the big deal, you say? )

I don't know, to me it just doesn't seem like something anyone would talk about in public, regardless of what they felt about it.

It's perfectly fine for a character to have a fucked up past, a lot of people have those, but all this is just begging for attention, I think, and at the expense of certain issues...it's even kind of disrespectful, to be honest.

Yeah, it's understandable, but to react like that? Wow. Somebody is not attaching appropriate weight to this action. If it means a lot to the character and they're very impassioned about it, they're less likely to talk about it casually. It's going to, at the very least, get them emotionally worked up. Doing something like that never gets easy, no matter how justified it was - unless your character is a sociopath. In which case, they need less sympathy and more serious mental help.

Reminds me a little bit of a character I had some years ago - a Kitsune with an odd genetic background ("Demonic"/"Celestial" - I can hear the *head desk* now, so suffice it to say that neither of these terms were used in the normal sense) whose father was a Tyrant (no, not overbearing, I mean a Tyrannical Dictator) in his home dimension.

Said character later reached a point where his own morality - and psyche - could not take anymore and he poisoned his own father, to the joy of all in that area of the world.

Unlike the character described in the rant, he does not speak of it casually, if at all. He has only spoken of it once, and simply because another character had asked about his parents.

The reaction was priceless, as the character that asked could best be described as a Neutral Good with Lawful tendencies. A fight nearly broke out until Yomi (my character) explained the situation.

Emotion? He hated having to do it, but there was no other way.

See, this kind of Rp can be done, tactfully! And meaningfully to the character and their development, in yours and my characters' positions.

My girl hasn't ever gotten to that point because a lot of the Rp dies; and the previous place I was at she had no memory of her past (no one did). This time around, she is very shut-in and immature, and headstrong because of the effects of her father. I don't understand why people think trauma means fun. It means deep and serious.

Indeed - any character that I have ever made that had a traumatic past .... They never talked about it unless prompted to do so and it was always done with the proper emotion being shown.

Actually, I've seen this pulled off, but because A) the people congratulating the perp knew the father, who was the worst thing in the world next to their phobias, and B) because they're working for said character.

Said character was a villain.

Father was never present nor played, apped, or spoken of outside of this character. Not villainous, just a drunk.

It might make sense if the people in quest have a weird sense of justice, but, yeah, realistically, they'd be pretty wary.
